Pre-hab AND rehabilitation physiotherapy services - for those looking to get the best possible outcome after surgery or even avoid surgery!

When muscles, bones and joints are in optimal condition before surgery, the impact of the inevitable muscle loss and joint stiffness is minimised post operatively.

Essentially, the stronger a person is going into surgery, the better the chances of an easier and faster recovery after surgery.

Some helpful guidelines to consider when considering prehabilitation:

  1. Start your program at least 6 weeks prior to surgery. Doing this will give you the best possible outcomes. If your surgery is sooner than this. Give us a call to discuss your options.

  2. Start slowly. This is not the time to aggravate an existing issue or trigger a new one.

  3. If you are physically fit, consider increasing your intensity, frequency or duration of current exercise as long as it doesn’t interfere with your current injury.

  4. Consider trying reformer pilates. Pilates is a great way to build strength in specific muscle groups.

Want to try avoid surgery altogether? Programs such as GLA:D which is a targeted program for Osteoarthritis saw 75% of participants being removed from surgical waitlists!

Rehabilitation - no matter what your injury or condition is, without rehabilitation you may have to deal with the consequences for the rest of your life.

After your surgery or injury your physiotherapist will work with you to:

  1. Help manage your swelling, promote healing and minimise scar tissue

  2. Increase the range of motion of the affected area

  3. Teach your muscles how to ‘switch on’ again

  4. Strengthen key muscles groups around the injured area

  5. Design a program that is structured, progressive and tailored to your individual goals and needs.

  6. Take control of your own outcomes; research has shown that patients who are actively engaged in their healthcare have better experiences than those that do not.

Once we have you up and feeling confident with your movement we will get you into our rehabilitation groups as quickly as possible. Depending on your surgery or injury this could be in as little as 1 week (hamstring strain) to 6 weeks (knee reconstruction).

Rehabilitation Groups - perfect for those who require ongoing intensive rehabilitation.

There are a few contributing factors to low adherence rates for rehabilitation especially those that require long term rehab. We know that you will get better results when you are doing your rehabilitation program on a regular basis but sometimes the costs associated with seeing a physiotherapist two to three times a week can make this impossible.

It can also be demotivating doing your rehabilitation at home. Sometimes pain can led to frustration and anxiety over how well you are progressing.

This is why we created our rehabilitation groups. Held at our performance centre (the OPC) on Lord Street in Richmond you will be an in environment where you can be supported and motivated by others who are in a similar situation to you.

Our Rehabilitation Groups are perfect for those who:

  • Have had surgery and are yet to return to pre injury fitness and strength

  • Are about to have surgery (see pre surgery clients below)

  • Require benchmark based exercises (being able to hit certain targets before progressing to the next stage) i.e ACL rehabilitation or total joint replacement

  • Have ongoing joint issues that requires strengthening to minimise pain and/or chances of future injury

  • Want to save money on expensive 1-1 physiotherapy

  • Want to be eligible for private health rebates in a gym environment

  • Want to surround yourself with motivated people in a fun & challenging environment
